Letter: Sheriff’s work much appreciatedCongratulations to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department. The department swore in 14 new peace officers onto our force, and promoted seven current peace officers to higher ranks. I want to take the time to say congratulations, and thank you. I use the term “peace officer” quite deliberately. Remorsefully, we all too often look at national news where law enforcement officers take force too far, and it results in the loss of civilian lives – something that didn’t used to be the norm in our society. I’ve noticed that officers here are far from and above that.
I have seen our officers conduct themselves responsibly and professionally, and respect the people in our community as much if not more than the law itself. I am very appreciative of that, and I welcome our 13 new officers to become a part of it. I feel that the right leader can contribute a lot to that, which is why I commend Sheriff Paul Laney regarding his leadership and public service. It wasn’t too long ago when I had the chance to sit down with him, and he spoke, with conviction, that he is in the charge of the people of Cass County – that he works for us.
It’s a fact and sentiment that all too many public servants forget, and I’m grateful that he takes it to heart. As Julius Caesar said, “In order to lead, one must first learn to follow.” Congratulations on all of your successes, and thank you again for your hard work and dedication.
