Kretchman's 46 points lead Davies to EDC boys hoops win over Shanley

FARGO – Tanner Kretchman and Andrew Kozlowski of Fargo Davies and Patrick Strom of Fargo Shanley each entered Friday night averaging 26 points per game or better.

Offense was expected and offense is what the trio delivered.

When the final buzzer sounded, Davies walked off the floor at McCormick Gymnasium with a 92-81 Eastern Dakota Conference boys basketball win over the Deacons – its first ever at the building.

Senior all-state guard Tanner Kretchman poured in a game-high 46 points to lead the North Dakota Class A, No. 2-ranked Eagles (5-0, 4-0 EDC).

“It is a huge win,” said Kretchman, who added five rebounds and five assists. “We have never won in this gym before, so it is huge coming in here and getting our first win. The EDC is tightening up now, and this is where teams start to separate, so it was great to get another tough conference win.”

Kretchman’s 46 is a new personal best and a new school record. Kretchman scored 38 points in a road win over Valley City last season.

“It is a great accomplishment, but it’s even better that we got the tough road win,” Kretchman added.

Strom, another all-state metro standout, finished with 45 points – a new personal best. The 6-foot-2 guard connected for a total of nine 3-pointers in the game.

Strom’s previous career high was 40 in a game last season against the Eagles in which he set a new Class A single-game record for 3-pointers with 11.

With Kretchman on, Strom knew he had to step up his game.

“We are so familiar with each other,” said Strom, who plays on the same traveling basketball team as Kretchman and Kozlowski. “If one guy is going, we feel that we need to step it up because we have similar abilities. Seeing him get going, I knew I had to get going in order to help my team.”

Davies led 43-38 at halftime. Shanley tied the game 47-47 with 14 minutes, 55 seconds left in the second half, but never took hold of the lead.

Kretchman and Kozlowski prevented that from happening.

Kozlowski, who finished with 21 points, had two slam dunks in the second half. The second was a highlight-reel, alley-oop slam from Kretchman that made it 86-71 with 3:34 left to play.

“It was a great high school basketball game,” Davies head coach Bart Manson said. “Shanley plays very well in this gym. We knew they were going to be sky high. They made shots and Strom was just unbelievable. Tanner had a great game too. It was a shootout at the OK Corral.

“People who weren’t here sure missed a great game,” Manson added.

Garang Garang added 11 points for the Deacons (2-4, 2-3).
