Shanley picks up EDC girls basketball win over Davies

FARGO – In the minutes following the opening tipoff, the Fargo Shanley and Fargo Davies girls basketball teams had different results on their offensive ends.

Shanley operated with high efficiency. Davies, on the other hand, had trouble converting, which allowed the North Dakota Class A, No. 4-ranked Deacons to seize control early.

Shanley defeated Davies 74-34 during an Eastern Dakota Conference contest on Friday at McCormick Gymnasium.

The Deacons (5-1, 4-1 EDC) executed an early 13-0 run against the No. 5-ranked Eagles (4-2, 3-2) and never looked back.

“We came out strong,” Fargo Shanley head coach Tim Jacobson said. “Defensively, I thought we were solid. We shut down some of their passing lanes and also rebounded the ball well.”

Shanley sophomore guard Sarah Jacobson poured in a team-high 22 points.

“We played hard and got after it on defense,” Sarah Jacobson said. “We battled with their (post players) and made the extra pass on offense.”

Davies went nearly 10 minutes without scoring in the first half. Shanley led 34-14 at halftime.

“The girls didn’t play the way I know they can,” Davies head coach Tonah Safranski said. “Shanley forced us into some things we haven’t seen much of this season. We turned the ball over way too much, and offensively we were out of sync.”

Shanley’s Somer Bucholz and Lauren Rotunda each added 11 points.

“We have great team speed this season,” Sarah Jacobson said. “We have done a great job of getting the ball up the court and finding the open player.”

Davies finished with 19 turnovers in the game.

Junior forward Alexis Klabo scored 22 points to lead the Eagles.
