Letter: Legislator has no grasp of realities

After returning from a county commission meeting at which we again (several years) struggled to find a way to repair one of our blacktop roads, I read Rep. Mike Nathe’s, R-Bismarck, opinion piece (Forum, Jan. 7) blaming local governments for higher personal property taxes. It made me feel ill!

Nathe implies that we commissioners levy higher taxes than necessary on our friends, neighbors and ourselves. Join us at budget time (as some of our local legislators have) and watch us struggle to meet higher payroll costs; terribly inflated road costs (think one million a mile); increased social service costs (in some cases, state mandated); increased equipment costs; increased technology costs; and increases in all our other departments.

We appreciate what our legislators have done in the area of schools and some help with roads. Don’t blame us; help us. We need your help to lower property taxes.

Most North Dakota lawmakers realize what we county officials are facing. Apparently Nathe does not.

Bunn is a Ransom County commissioner.
