West Fargo Hockey Association again selling gun raffle ticketsWEST FARGO – There will be more prizes available and more tickets sold in the 2014 West Fargo Hockey Association gun raffle than ever before.
Raffle ticket sales will go public Tuesday. Tickets are $40 each and offer a 1 in 20 chance of winning a prize. Six-thousand tickets are being sold.
The association will raffle off 300 guns – including rifles and handguns – and a 2014 Polaris 570 Ranger to raise money for the city’s youth hockey programs. Organizers hope to raise enough money to build a new ice rink.
Last year, the West Fargo Hockey Association drew national attention for conducting its gun raffle after the December massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
Organizers of the raffle later said the media attention caused an increase in turnout for the annual banquet and drawing. All 4,000 raffle tickets were sold, raising about $80,000.
Mike Prochnow, board member of the West Fargo Hockey Association, said Scheels store credit will be given away for each gun raffled off.
Winners can use the credit on something other than a gun, but those who want the firearm must undergo a strict background check performed by Scheels All Sports before picking it up.
“We’re not handing guns out to felons. We’re not handing out guns to kids,” Prochnow said.
A presale of tickets is now underway.
“The ticket sales have been really good so far,” he said. “Our mailbox has been full every day with people reserving tickets. There are a lot of people that look forward to the raffle every year.”
After the presale ends on Monday, tickets can be purchased by the public at Scheels All Sports in Fargo or reserved online by visiting the West Fargo Hockey Association’s website at www.westfargohockey.com.
The 2014 banquet and drawing will be April 19 in Fargo.
