Weather Talk: December ends with rank of 11th coldest on record

December finished with an average temperature of 4.0 degrees. That ranked last month as the 11th-coldest December on record.

Other recent Decembers that were colder were 2000 with an average temperature of minus 0.2 degrees, which is currently ranked as the third coldest on record; 1985 with an average temperature of 3.9 degrees ,which is currently ranked 10th; and 1983 with an average temperature of minus 0.3 degrees and currently ranks as the second coldest on record.

The coldest December since records have been kept was in 1886 when the average temperature for the month was minus 0.5 degrees.

Total snow in December was 16.1 inches, which is 4.9 inches above average. Yet, because November was nearly snow free, through the end of last month, our seasonal total was still slightly below average. Liquid equivalency in December’s snow was 1.21 inches which is 0.38 inches above average.
