ND officials meet with BNSF CEO on rail safetyFORT WORTH, Texas - North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple met with BNSF Railway CEO Matt Rose on Friday to discuss Monday’s train derailment near Casselton, N.D., and ways to enhance rail shipment of North Dakota crude oil.
“We’re going to pursue this until we’re satisfied that the appropriate measures are in place for maximum public safety,” Dalrymple said in a statement following his one-hour meeting with Rose at BNSF headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.
Dalrymple and other officials will be in Texas this weekend to cheer on North Dakota State University during the NCAA FCS Championship.
Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., plans to meet with Rose today and Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., is coordinating a meeting with Rose on Sunday.
Hoeven said in a statement that agencies need to rigorously review ways to ship oil more safely, including advancing “long-overdue rules for building new tankers with enhanced safety features as soon as possible.”
Heitkamp said in a statement she plans to press BNSF about cooperating with federal investigations and doing everything possible to clean up the spill and compensate those affected.
“We must continue to push all sides for answers,” Heitkamp said.
