Fargo Shanley defeats Fargo South in EDC girls basketball

FARGO – Fargo Shanley’s offense hit no delays on Friday at Fargo South High School.

The Class A, No. 5-ranked Deacons were dialed in from the start and cruised to an 85-38 Eastern Dakota Conference girls basketball win over the Bruins.

Perimeter shooting got Shanley going, and it snowballed from there for the Deacons.

“The girls worked the ball around well,” Fargo Shanley head coach Tim Jacobson said. “They took the open shots when they were there. They were able to get started early, and they didn’t stop. It was a great team effort.”

The Deacons connected for a total of eight 3-pointers in the first half, four coming from junior guard Sydney Weber.

“It felt great out there,” said Weber, who finished with five 3s and 17 points. “We played as a team and made sure everyone got involved on offense. Individual stats didn’t matter.”

Shanley (3-1, 2-1 EDC) went on a 16-2 run during the first half and led 46-21 at halftime.

South (2-3, 2-2) was unable to contain the Deacons’ offense and didn’t help its cause, committing 20 turnovers.

“Shanley is a great team, so we knew we would have our hands full,” South head coach Jason Smedshammer said. “They crashed the boards and got some second chances with several offensive rebounds. That compounded with our turnovers led to an uphill battle.”

South sophomore forward Emily Stroup got into early foul trouble and was forced to sit the final seven minutes of the first half with four fouls.

Shanley opened the second half with a 20-2 run fueled by several transition buckets.

“We were able to ball up the court quick off our rebounds, and that was something I thought played to our advantage in the game,” Jacobson said.

Sophomore guard Sarah Jacobson finished with 17 points for the Deacons and sophomore forward Lauren Rotunda added 16.

Junior center Nya Chakin scored eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Bruins. Stroup led South with 11 rebounds and added six points.
