Steve Stark poem: Hail the Bison

Hail the Bison

This prairie land was silent

save for bison in their prime

The beasts they called Tatanka

roamed the high plains at that time

Those early teams they took the name

of Farmers when they played their game

But that name soon would change again

And Aggies were the sporty men.

In 1919 football’s coach

looked to make a new approach.

Aggies was a little worn,

He said a new name should be born:

One with guts for all to see

One with strength and history

And thus the Bison came to be

back upon the high prairie.

In early days they had some slide-

The 60s got ‘em back in stride

And average set its goals on great

for sports at North Dakota State.

Soon titles earned would make the scene,

Both genders played so smart and lean.

Some Bison names we’ll always know

for seeds of history they helped sow:

Mudra, Erhardt, all for sport

Wacker, Bucky, Erv and Mort

Lynn & Amy‘s names won‘t fade,

Rocky, Entzion, Collette and Ade.

Loftsgard, Ellis, Kolpack-names

associated with the games

Adelson and Boyd and Roy

Scott Miller, and that Simmers boy.

Joe Chapman in the prexy’s role

got Gene Taylor and Craig Bohl.

And now in Bison's Thunder Dome

A new division found a home.

We've ordered (as you’ve heard) new gear

To celebrate this banner year.

Our acronym might look askew

I like it: ND1SU!

The "Bison’s strength is in the herd",

It’s in sports journal's written word,

It’s in those women and young men

Who win or fall to rise again.

Our state has fields of green and gold

And North Dakota’s story’s bold

And in this wide and open space

Our teams have earned historic place.

Where athletes trained so they might see

That goals, like dreams, can come to be.

And fans with pride can still be stirred

All the hail the Bison-spread the word!

Across the nation fans all cheer

To celebrate this banner year.

The country saw us all outside

On GameDay glowing Bison Pride!

Our current Bison stand as champs times two

And come tomorrow they could do

What many of us think will be

First place again for number three!
