Grand Forks Central edges Fargo South-Shanley in shootout for boys hockey win

FARGO – Grand Forks Central’s Casey Johnson had a plan when his number was called during a shootout.

The sophomore defenseman skated to center ice, took the puck with his stick and slowly skated toward Fargo South-Shanley goalie Jake Salentine.

Johnson’s mind had been made up on where his shot would be directed. The shot got by Salentine and helped the Knights to a 4-3 shootout win during an East Region boys hockey game Thursday at Scheels Arena.

“During the game, I noticed (Salentine) had trouble on his block, so when I stepped on the ice, I knew I was going to put the shot on his stick side,” Johnson said.

Johnson’s attempt was Central’s fourth of the shootout. Senior goaltender Taner Bender stopped all four of South-Shanley’s attempts in the shootout.

Bender finished with a total of 25 saves.

Central (8-2-0, 4-1-0 East Region) comes away with two points and the Bruins (5-5-1, 4-2-1) earn one point to remain in the top half of the region standings.

“The good thing is we get a point out of it,” South-Shanley head coach Wade Storey said. “It gets us a little closer to where we want to be in the standings.”

The Knights scored a goal in all three periods, with each goal being the first scored of the period.

“We put some pressure on them early, but we let off a bit,” Johnson said. “We started each period with a lot of fire.”

Senior forward Tarek Paranica scored Central’s first goal 2 minutes, 25 seconds into the game. Austin Johnson and Ryan Griggs also scored goals for the Knights.

South-Shanley answered Central’s first two goals and took a 3-2 lead when sophomore forward Riley Giauque got a shot past Bender.

“(Central) worked hard and got some puck luck because of it,” Storey said. “They outworked us in those situations and took advantage of opportunities.”

Salentine finished with 42 saves for the Bruins.

Tyler Bossert and Tom George added goals for South-Shanley.
