Weather Talk: Last year’s average temp 1.9 degrees below average

The average temperature last year was 40.5 degrees. It was the coldest year in Fargo-Moorhead since 2009 and 1.9 degrees below average.

The year 2012, you may recall, finished as the second-warmest year on record, just slightly cooler than our record-setting year back in 1987. The average temperature in 2012 was 46.4 degrees, meaning last year was nearly 6 degrees cooler than the previous year, which is the greatest year-to-year difference since records began in 1881.

In typical fashion for our climate, 2012 was full of extremes, from months well above average to well below average, but it was the three very cold months of March, April and December that pushed the yearly temperature well below normal. Those three months all finished approximately 10 degrees below average.

The warmest month last year, per the average, was September. That month finished 5.3 degrees above normal.
