Meet Adrian, FM's first baby of 2014
Adrian, all 7 pounds, 11 ounces and 20 inches tall of him, came into the world at 2:40 a.m. at Sanford Hospital, clocking in as Fargo-Moorhead’s first baby of 2014.
“He’s a couple of days late. I didn’t think he’d ever come. So he’s a great gift, said Adrian’s mother, Paige Swanson of West Fargo. “I didn’t think he’d ever come. …. It was worth the wait for sure.”
Swanson, 20, had been to the hospital early Tuesday morning, and was sent home. Then, around 3 p.m., her water broke and she returned to Sanford and was admitted.
“Our nurses were telling me that there were five in the running,” for New Year’s baby, Swanson said. But three gave birth just before midnight, and of the one other mother ready to have a baby, “I knew we were way ahead.”
Swanson’s nurse, Alison Vogel, said everything went well.
“Baby’s healthy, mama’s healthy,” Vogel said.
Three television cameramen, three reporters, a photographer and a set of grandparents and great-grandparents crowded into Swanson’s room as she rocked Adrian, who snoozed quietly, his peach fuzz of fine black hair covered by a cap, even as hot camera lights raised sweat on his mother’s brow.
“I didn’t sweat this much in labor,” Swanson joked.
“Grandpa is feeling pretty proud,” said Steve Swanson, as his wife Jill took photos.
“Pretty exciting stuff. Makes us feel pretty old,” quipped great-grandfather Larry Akason, as he and his wife, Mary, hovered on the fringes of the crowd.
Swanson and her baby received a gift basket from Sanford that included lotion, shampoo, diapers, onesies, a Teddy bear, a blanket and an engraved spoon.
“I’m so excited. I go with the flow I guess,” and “learn how to take care of a baby,” Swanson said.
The first baby born at Essentia Health-Fargo arrived at 10:06 a.m., Es-sentia spokeswoman Kim Kaiser said.
Arya Suran Faiq was born to Dareen Amedi and Suran Faiq.
Arya, who is the Moorhead couple’s fourth child, weighed in at 7 pounds and 0.9 ounces at birth, and is 20 inches tall.
