Lisbon's Urbach finishes 2nd at 152 pounds in his first Rumble on the Red
That was the kind of matchup Urbach wanted since he was a freshman.
“One of the main reasons we decided to take our team here was because of Dylan Urbach; him asking about, ‘Can we go to the Rumble?’ as a freshman,” said Lisbon head coach Joe Kern.
“He loves the sport of wrestling.”
Apple Valley junior Dayton Racer proved too much for Urbach on Saturday, earning a 6-0 decision in the 152 finals at the Fargodome.
Racer (16-0) is ranked No. 14 at 152, according to InterMat’s national high school rankings.
“I wrestled pretty good this weekend, but I have to get in better shape. I found out that last match,” said Urbach, who has a 16-1 record this season. “It will help me get better. He is a great wrestler.”
Urbach earned a North Dakota Class B state title at 145 pounds last season. He said the Rumble will help in his quest to earn a second state crown.
“He has never been (one) to back down from a challenge, and he’s been that way since seventh grade,” Kern said.
A perennial national wrestling power, Apple Valley cruised to the team title at the Rumble with 343 points. West Fargo finished second with 187.5 points. The Packers had two wrestlers make the finals. Both took second.
“We put two in the finals and had eight placers,” said West Fargo head coach Kayle Dangerud.
“For a tournament of this caliber it was a good weekend for us.”
West Fargo junior Jordan Shearer was trying to win another Rumble championship, having won two previous. However, Shearer lost a 9-3 decision against Apple Valley junior Maolu Woiwor in the title match at 132.
Woiwor built a 5-0 lead in the first period and Shearer wasn’t able to make up that early deficit.
“It’s tough when you got down early that much,” Dangerud said. “That kid is tough and it’s tough to come back from that lead. You can’t get down that much that early.”
Shearer is a four-time North Dakota Class A state champion. He won a Rumble on the Red title at 120 a season ago.
“It was very much of a disappointment,” Shearer said. “Every tournament I’m in I am going out there hoping to win.”
Packers junior Weston Dobler got off to a strong start in the 160 finals, but couldn’t hold off Scott West junior Andrew Fogarty.
Dobler had a 2-1 lead after one period, but Fogarty scored a key takedown late in the second period for a 4-2 lead. Fogarty added a takedown in the third period en route to a 6-2 victory.
Fogarty earned a major decision against Dobler when the two wrestled at the Minnesota Christmas Tournament last weekend.
“We definitely closed the gap there,” Dangerud said of Dobler.
“We try to get better each week. Tournaments like these expose our bad habits and flaws and know we go back to the practice room and work on those things.”
