Davies comes close to Stadstad tournament title

GRAND FORKS – Fargo Davies wrapped up its fourth trip to the Herald Jason Stadstad Hockey Classic on Saturday. And the Eagles left Purpur Arena with three wins and came close to winning the school’s first hockey title in Davies’ short existence.

The Eagles beat Shakopee, Minn., 6-3 on the final day of the event. Davies won all three of its games in the round-robin tournament and finished just behind Grand Forks Red River, which won the seventh annual event.

“We like coming here,” said Davies coach Brian Davidson said. “They changed the format this season so we got to play some different teams. And we can’t thank the Stadstads enough for this tournament.”

Most wins, goal differential and fewest goals allowed were the criteria in the scoring system for the tournament. By virtue of Red River’s 8-0 win against Proctor in the final game, the Riders had enough points to secure the title.

The Eagles were on the verge of the title when they scored quick goals late in the third period to seal the win against Shakopee.

Chase Bischof and Alek Groth scored goals 17 seconds apart late in the game to produce the final score. Both scored two goals for the Eagles, while Aidan Hartness also scored two goals as Davies improved to 10-1.

Davies beat Proctor, Minn., 5-4 on the opening day followed a 4-0 win over Chisago Lakes on Friday.

Davidson said his team turned in strong performances all three days.

“This tournament is good for us because we can play three games in three days,” said Davidson. “And we had a lot of gas in tank at the end.

“We were able to play three lines and six defensemen the whole time.”

Shakopee’s Jon Wilemessen gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead in the first, but Hartness and Groth both scored later in the period for a 2-1 Davies lead. The Eagles pushed the lead to 4-1 before Shakopee rallied late in the second on goals from Bubba Kubes and Preston Husom.

But Bischof and Groth responded late in the third to seal the win.
