Kruger’s shutout leads Davies to Stadstad win

GRAND FORKS – Coming into the second day of the Jason Stadstad Hockey Classic at Purpur Arena, Fargo Davies was looking for some balance. Before Friday, the top line of Aidan Hartness, Tristan Hartness and Bryan Pallen had accounted for 21 of the Eagles’ 39 goals.

In addition to a goal from both of the Hartness brothers, Davies received goals from junior defenseman C.J. Lotzer and sophomore defenseman Gage Hanson to lift the Eagles’ to a 4-0 win over Chisago Lakes.

For Lotzer, it was his third goal on the season, while Hanson posted his first.

“I think the biggest thing is that we had three lines that were playing and three lines that were contributing all night,” said Eagles’ coach Brian Davidson.

Just 23 seconds into the second period, Caleb Wagner fired a shot from the point which Chisago Lakes goalie Jake Dubose was unable to cover. Tristan Hartness found the rebound and backhanded it in for a 1-0 lead.

Minutes later, Pallen skated into the Wildcats zone and made a centering pass to a wide-open Hanson, who tapped it in.

“I think that was the game that we needed,” said Davidson. “We talked about making sure we got shots on net early in the game, and I thought we did that.”

Midway through the third period, Davies received insurance when Lotzer was able to put one past the screened goaltender.

With 1:35 remaining, Pallen found a charging Aidan Hartness with a centering pass to finish off the scoring for Davies, which improved to 9-1.

The Eagles finished with a 29-18 advantage in shots on goal.

Alex Kruger was strong in net once again for Davies, posting his second shutout in 10 starts. Kruger came into Friday’s game with a 90.2 save percentage.

“The tournament is important because its three games, and when you want to win three games in a row at the end of the season, you’ve got to be able to that,” said Davidson. “And I think our guys are proving we’re able to do that right now.”
