Lions put former Bison TE Veldman on roster for game against Vikings

DETROIT – Former North Dakota State tight end Matt Veldman was called up from the practice squad for the Detroit Lions.

Veldman, in his second NFL season, was a free-agent acquisition by Jacksonville in 2012. The Minnesota Vikings host the Lions in the Metrodome’s final game Sunday.

The Lions had an opening on their practice squad when tight end Dorin Dickerson was placed on injured reserve and Veldman was moved up.

Veldman, at 6-foot-7 and 257 pounds in his college days, played for the Bison from 2008-2011. The Becker, Minn., product hauled 584 yards and seven touchdowns during his NDSU career. He had a career-high 331 yards and three touchdowns as a senior in 2011, helping the Bison win the FCS championship.
