‘Bright-color people’ to open textile store in downtown Fargo

FARGO – Modern Textiles, a new fabric store at 17 7th St. S. in downtown Fargo, is set to open Jan. 7.

Owners Roxanne Beauvais and Connie Biselx say they were motivated to start the business because it’s the kind of store they love spending time in.

“I think our clients are people who sew and like to create, but also somebody that is looking for something that is less traditional and more modern,” said Biselx, glancing at the store’s inventory, which leans heavily toward bright and bold prints.

“We’re kind of bright-color people, Biselx said.

While they expect quilters to make up a large segment of their clientele, they also see their business as an all-around fabric shop, Beauvais said.

“We have some of everything,” she said. “We do have knits and dress weights and other kinds of fabrics that are for sewing clothes.”

The shop also has a home décor area, featuring heavyweight fabrics suitable for reupholstering furniture.

While their store has yet to open, Beauvais and Biselx have actually been in business for more than a year, having sold pre-cut fabric on consignment in other boutique stores in Fargo, including Unglued Market and Eco Chic Boutique.

“We feel like we’ve taken the past year to know who our customer is,” Beauvais said, adding they believe their customer is a lot like them – someone frustrated at not being able to get their hands on the kind of fabrics they desire.

“We couldn’t find what we wanted, and we were traveling outside of Fargo trying to find fabrics we had seen on the Internet or other places. We thought, ‘This is crazy, Fargo is big enough to have its own modern fabric store,’ ” Beauvais said.

Being sewers themselves, Biselx said now that they are running a business it can sometimes be frustrating to see fun fabrics arrive and not have time to start projects of their own.

Modern Textiles is large enough to accommodate a classroom, and Biselx said they plan to start sewing classes in February.

“We hope to not just do sewing classes but also sew-ins and some community projects with our customers,” Biselx added.

She said the store is also designed to be kid-friendly, with a space set up specifically for children.

“We want to welcome children, so we’ll have lots of kids’ classes,” Biselx said, adding, “We’ll start story time once a week on Tuesdays, Tuesday mornings, like at 10 a.m.”
