Officers shut down I-494 in Woodbury during 'significant arrest'

WOODBURY, Minn. - A body armor-wearing man brandishing a gun was arrested Tuesday during a morning rush-hour traffic stop that temporarily shut down freeway traffic in Woodbury, authorities said.

Officers from multiple agencies conducted the arrest, on Interstate 494. Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Randy Gustafson said no shots were fired, but a passenger in the vehicle was arrested.

The suspect’s name was not immediately released. No formal charges had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon.

“I think that they would characterize it as a significant arrest,” he said, referring to Ramsey County investigators, who led the arrest.

A person who was being forced to drive the vehicle against his will was briefly detained but not arrested, Gustafson said.

He said law enforcement used a maneuver to force the vehicle off the road. The traffic stop came after a chase that never exceeded highway speed limits, Gustafson said.

Officers shut down southbound I-494 for about 15 minutes for motorists’ safety, he said.

“They knew that there was that potential for danger,” he said, adding that the suspect had a firearm and was wearing a bulletproof vest.
