Letter: Excellent work on editorial pageThanks to The Forum for printing Lee Hamilton’s commentary, “Dogged Re- porting,” in the Dec. 7 Forum. It was perhaps the finest essay on the role of the press and of the ordinary citizen in a democracy that I have ever read.
It seems to me that your editorial board and staff do a superb job of living up to the standards that Hamilton presents for informing the public. You are especially good at dealing with the foibles and blind spots of North Dakota’s state and local governments, and you also toss in an excellent mix of national opinions, such as Kathleen Parker’s columns.
I also really enjoy the printed opinions of local readers. At times, the opinion page is far more entertaining than the funnies are. For example, Dec. 10’s “my pretty little head” broadside on Sen. Dwight Cook, R-Mandan, N.D., by Julie Sandvig is an absolute classic, and it had the folks in the office here gleefully cackling.
As for NSA and Edward Snowden, he may have committed crimes against the government – as did Patrick Henry, Nathan Hale and most of our Founding Fathers – but he did the American electorate two big favors: He showed us all what the government was doing behind our backs and he clearly demonstrated just how vulnerable NSA’s super-secret collections were to intentional misuse and exploitation.
If Snowden’s actions get NSA’s Orwellian nose out of my business, that’s fine with me.
Thanks for all your hard work.
