Johannesson scores OT goal to lift South-Shanley past West Fargo

WEST FARGO – James Johannesson made a habit of running through defenses as a standout all-state running back on the football field during the fall season.

Johannesson’s method of compromising defenses has changed a bit during the winter sports season.

On Friday, the junior forward needed to skate through a stingy West Fargo defense in order to help Fargo South-Shanley to a 5-4 overtime victory at Veterans Memorial Arena.

Johannesson split two defenders and got an unassisted shot past West Fargo goaltender Bailey Vareberg for the game-winner with 3 minutes, 44 seconds left in overtime.

“It was like watching him in the backfield,” South-Shanley head coach Wade Storey said. “As soon as he got some space and got the puck in front of him he was able to get it in.”

“We stuck together as a team the whole game,” Johannesson added. “One of my teammates chipped the puck to me and I was able to weave around a few guys. It was a lucky bounce and it went in.”

West Fargo (1-5-0, 1-3-0) forced the overtime period when junior defenseman Jake Hoy scored an unassisted goal with 53 seconds left in regulation.

South-Shanley (3-2-0,

3-1-0) scored three goals in the second period to go up 4-3 heading in the third.

“This is another character win for us,” Storey said. “Our guys weren’t going to give up and we were able to control the overtime period, which was nice to see.”

The Bruins struck early, getting a goal from Peter Bueide 12 seconds into the game.

West Fargo answered with goals from sophomore Ben Dirks and senior Tyler Berginski, which allowed the Packers to skate into the locker room up 2-1 after the first period.

Tom George, Riley Fisher and Parker Simonson scored goals for the Bruins in the second period.

Vareberg finished with 25 saves for the Packers. South-Shanley senior goaltender Jake Salentine stopped 20 shots for the Bruins.
