Dragons women cruise past Bemidji State for home victory

MOORHEAD – Minnesota State Moorhead dropped a flurry of points on Bemidji State Friday night.

The Dragons netted a season-high in points en route to a 94-69 victory against the Beavers in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women’s basketball at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.

Freshman Morgan Banasik scored a career-high 20 points and sophomore Meghan Roehrich added 20 points off the bench to help fuel the MSUM victory.

“You could tell that they were catching in rhythm and not really thinking about it,” Dragons head coach Karla Nelson said.

“We all played really well together and made that extra pass,” added Banasik, who made 3 of 4 shots from 3-point range.

The Dragons (5-3, 1-3 NSIC) won their first conference game this season, snapping a three-game losing streak. MSUM dropped two NSIC games last weekend at the University of Mary and at Minot State.

“It feels really good, especially after last weekend,” Banasik said. “We were all feeling down.”

The Dragons seized control with a 22-3 run that started midway through the first half. Roehrich scored seven points during that game-changing stretch, including a 3-point play. A Morgan Zabel basket capped the rally, giving the Dragons a 34-16 lead with 3 minutes, 52 seconds remaining in the first half. MSUM scored the final 10 points in the first half to build a 44-21 lead through 20 minutes. Roehrich and Zabel each had 11 points at halftime. Zabel finished with 18 points.

“For the most part our problems haven’t been the scoring part,” Nelson said. “The problem for us has been on the defensive end. I thought we played with a little more energy.”

The Dragons added 50 points in the second half to maintain the lead. Banasik scored 16 of her points after halftime, including 3-for-3 shooting from 3-point range.

“I think that this team has a lot more to give and it is my job to figure out how to get them to give more,” Nelson said.
