VIDEO: Blaze breaks out at Moorhead commercial building
After fire alarms sounded, firefighters arrived at the former Akin’s Electric building, 320 Highway 75 N., just after noon and saw heavy black smoke billowing from the north side of the building, said Assistant Chief Greg Doeden.
Crews had to cut a triangular hole in a garage door to gain access, and had the fire knocked down by 1 p.m., Doeden said. Crews spent the afternoon putting out hot spots.
Doeden said three businesses operate out of the building, but the building owner told them that no one was inside when the fire started.
He said fire damage was contained to the building’s north side, although Med-Plus Health Care on the south side of the building sustained heavy smoke damage.
“It was a small engine shop on this (north) end, so obviously you had a lot of combustibles: oil and gas and whatnot,” Doeden said. “But once again, we haven’t started our investigation on whether that played into the cause or not.”
