Run late in first half helps Butler down UND in men's hoops

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of North Dakota made a trip to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday night and for the first 16 minutes North Dakota had a surprising shot at making history.

But Butler University - now a member of the big-time Big East - used four-minute power surge late in the first half to defeat North Dakota 79-64 before 6,355 fans at Hinkle - the sixth-oldest venue in college basketball.

That four-minute surge produced a 14-2 Butler run, a spurt that prevented UND from taking its biggest win in the Division I era.’

And Butler was efficient in the final minutes of the half, using that 14-2 spurt to take a 39-22 lead into the locker room.

The Bulldogs’ surge was led by Kellen Dunham, a 6-foot-6 guard, who led Butler with 29 points, while 6-6 forward Khyle Marshall added 21 for the Bulldogs, now 6-2.
