Dragons topple Mary in men's hoops

BISMARCK – Minnesota State Moorhead used a big scoring spurt early in the first half to come away with an 83-73 win over Mary in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men’s basketball Friday.

Mary led 17-13 with 13 minutes, 24 seconds to play, but Moorhead answered with a 25-6 run to take command. Tyler Vaughan netted two 3-pointers during the stretch while Ben Figini and Jordan Riewer added one apiece. Riewer’s triple with 5:34 to play gave the Dragons a 38-23 lead – their biggest of the night.

“We were acting surprised in the first half that Tyler Vaughan is a shooter,” U-Mary coach Jevin Budde said. “He’s a great player, but we let him have way too many looks. Our turnovers in the first half were really bad. Having 14 turnovers is way too many. You can’t expect to win games when your turn the ball over 14 times in a half.”

Vaughan led Moorhead with 21 points, including a 6-of-7 effort from beyond the arc. Riewer added 19 points while Malik Wood – a former Bismarck State star – came off the bench to add 12. Riewer (10 of 10) and Wood (8 of 8) were perfect from the charity stripe.

Chris Mason led U-Mary with 17 points. Damonta Henry added 16, Marc Musungayi 13, Devan Douglas 12 and Jalen Jaspers 11.

The Marauders narrowed the deficit to 45-35 at the half and came within one, 60-59, with 10:06 remaining in the contest.

“Our guys continued to scratch and claw and fight,” Budde said. “We just can’t be a rollercoaster. We’ve got to be more consistent. We were trying to get over that hump. We were putting them on the foul line and had bad fouls.”

The Dragons cashed in on 33 of 42 attempts from the free-throw line while U-Mary made 20 of 25. The teams combined for 49 infractions.

Moorhead remained unbeaten at 2-0 in the NSIC and 6-0 overall while U-Mary slipped to 0-2 and 2-5.
