South-Shanley tops Fargo North in a shootout for boys hockey win
It was an unconventional hat trick that helped the Bruins to a 3-2 shootout victory over Fargo North during an East Region boys hockey game at John E. Carlson Coliseum.
The two teams were tied 2-2 after regulation and an eight-minute overtime period forcing the shootout, which South-Shanley won 2-0 with goals from Giauque and junior defenseman Peter Bueide. Bueide’s goal clinched it, giving the Bruins (2-1-0, 2-0-0 East Region) two points.
“The guys kept going after it,” South-Shanley head coach Wade Storey said. “It was a good character win for us.”
South-Shanley trailed 1-0 entering the third period, but Giauque re-directed a shot that got past North junior goaltender Austin Toussaint on a power play to tie the game 1-1 with 14 minutes, 34 seconds left to play.
North (0-4-2, 0-3-1 East Region) answered with a goal from senior forward Spencer Helming with 5:20 remaining.
Less than a minute later, South-Shanley was awarded a penalty shot and Giauque was tapped to go for the equalizer with 4:29 left to play.
“All the guys up front did a great job,” Giauque said. “We got a good chance, they drew the penalty and luckily my shot went in.”
After being outshot by the Bruins in early in the game, the Spartans recovered and grabbed an early 1-0 lead when senior forward Jackson Graalum scored a goal with 1 minute, 55 seconds left in the first period.
A total of two penalties were called in the game, and each team had one chance to skate with an advantage.
“I got to credit Wade Storey’s team,” North boys head coach Rob Aasand said. “They are very fast. They cashed in on their power play, but five-on-five I thought we hung in with them. They got our best game of the year and I thought my guys took a big step forward in improving from the first couple of games we have played this season.”
South-Shanley senior goaltender Jake Salentine posted 36 saves. Salentine stopped shots from Graalum and James Schock in the shootout.
