Gym coach charged with tattooing minors without consent

COTTAGE GROVE, Minn. - A 37-year-old Hastings man has been cited for two counts of tattooing minors without written parental consent.

Terry Robert Hardy told police he had received verbal permission, but police and parents dispute that.

The tattoos were done over the summer. The charge is a misdemeanor.

One of the teens, a 16-year-old girl, received three tattoos from Hardy. One is on her wrist and reads “Strength.” Another was done on her shoulder blade, and a cross was done on her neck.

Hardy is the head gymnastics coach at Park High School.

Minnesota statute 609.2246 reads: “No person under the age of 18 may receive a tattoo unless the person provides written parental consent to the tattoo. The consent must include both the custodial and noncustodial parents, where applicable.”
