Gophers top Florida State in ACC-Big Ten Challenge

MINNEAPOLIS – Andre Hollins scored a game-high 21 points as the University of Minnesota held off visiting Florida State 71-61 in men’s basketball Tuesday in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

Austin Hollins added 16 points and five rebounds for Minnesota (7-2), which turned the ball over just six times. Andre Hollins chipped in with four assists for the Golden Gophers, who scored 12 of their final 14 points from the free-throw line.

Okaro White recorded 16 points and eight rebounds for Florida State (5-3), which was 2-for-10 from beyond the arc.

Ian Miller provided a spark off the bench with 16 points and seven assists for the Seminoles.

Minnesota blew a tight game open with a 15-2 run that put the Golden Gophers up 23-12 after Austin Hollins’ 3-pointer midway through the first half. Florida State slowly chipped away and trimmed the deficit to three following Miller’s layup before Minnesota scored the last three points to take a 33-27 edge into the break.

The Golden Gophers opened the second half on a 10-1 run to push the lead to 15 before the Seminoles answered with a quick 7-0 spurt to claw within 43-35. Miller hit a pair of free throws to close the gap to four with 3 minutes, 43 seconds remaining, but the Seminoles could get no closer as Minnesota picked up its second consecutive victory over Florida State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge despite shooting 34 percent from the field.
