Moorhead tops South-Davies in girls hockey

FARGO – The Moorhead girls hockey team scored three goals in the first period on Monday and never looked back.

The early scoring outburst helped the Spuds defeat Fargo South-Davies 7-1 in nonconference action at Scheels Arena.

Moorhead (2-3-0) entered Monday having scored a total of eight goals in its first four games of the season.

“We have been struggling on offense, so it was good to see us get a few right away,” Moorhead head coach Kaylee Black said. “I think it put a little spark in us and helped us build a little confidence.”

Moorhead got on the board in the first two minutes when senior forward Jennafer Kagan scored after redirecting a shot from senior defenseman Rebekah Hakk.

The Spuds added two more goals later in the first, both being scored in the span of 42 seconds.

Hakk buried a slap shot on a Moorhead power play with 9 minutes, 54 seconds left in the opening period and sophomore defenseman Jordan Evavold added a goal one the Spuds next shift.

South-Davies didn’t help itself committing five penalties in the first period skating much of the first 17 minutes shorthanded.

“Any time you spot a team three goals and start getting in the box it doesn’t help your chances,” Fargo South-Davies head coach Josh Issertell said.

Moorhead opened the second period equally effective, scoring two goals in the first five minutes to take a 5-0 lead.

Kagan and freshman forward Monique Aanenson each scored two goals for the Spuds.

“Give a lot of credit to Moorhead,” Issertell said. “They capitalized on opportunities. They put us in a hole early and built off that.”

Senior goaltender Jocelyn Nelson collected 23 saves for Moorhead.

“(Jocelyn) made the saves she needed to make and that helps us play hockey,” Black said.

Sophomore forward Miryley Hartel scored the Bruins’ lone goal. Junior goaltender Emily Grothmann made 44 saves in net for South Davies (1-2-0).
