Neighbors: Presidential poem omitted Kennedy
But there was one significant omission; the name John F. Kennedy was missing.
Several readers have pointed this out to Neighbors, noting that it missed Kennedy’s name even as the nation was observing the 50th anniversary of his assassination.
Neighbors apologizes for not catching this.
Writing up a storm
On a more positive note, here’s another story about Fargo’s Dakota Business College and its handwriting courses that many students took.
One of them was Audrey (Nelson) Savig, Audubon, Minn., who attended DBC in 1959.
“Yes, we did handwriting, three hours a day, 1½ hours each morning and 1½ hours in the afternoon,” Audrey says.
She also writes of one memorable experience at DBC.
“I will never forget a terrific thunder, rain and wind storm that occurred when our class was being held in the upstairs auditorium,” she writes. “The whole building shook, along with the hundreds of huge windows along the entire south and east walls.
“We were thankful to make it down those old wooden rickety steps to the landing. It was an unforgettable experience.”
Audrey goes on to say that F. Leland Watkins and his wife, who ran the school, “were very quaint, to say the least, but they were bound and determined to take us under their wings and get us started on a career. I ended up at the Clay County Welfare Department in the Moorhead Courthouse, working for Mr. McMullen.”
Neighbors will have more DBC memories down the road.
