Fouls doom Dragons women in basketball loss

MOORHEAD – Megan Mutchler collected a game-high 24 points as Northern State defeated MSU Moorhead 96-88 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women’s basketball Saturday.

“Northern just picked us apart on defense,” said MSUM head coach Karla Nelson. “On defense, we were just very poor.”

The Wolves (5-0, 1-0 NSIC) capitalized on MSUM’s 31 fouls.

“We committed way too many fouls,” Nelson said. “I don’t know a team that can win a game when you let an opponent shoot 43 free throws.”

Northern State capitalized, making 32 of its 43 free-throw attempts.

Megan Strese led the Dragons with 23 points on 11 of 11 shooting.

“Her performance wasn’t a surprise, but it was great to see,” Nelson said. “I can live with our offensive performance. You’d think with 88 points you could win the game.”
