BIA sending seven new agents to help Spirit LakeDEVILS LAKE, N.D. — The head of the Spirit Lake Tribe says the reservation is getting seven new law enforcement agents from a branch of the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Chairman Russ McDonald tells WDAZ-TV that the move is temporary but he hopes it's the first step in a long-term investment on the northeastern North Dakota reservation.
The additions come after ongoing complaints about child welfare problems at Spirit Lake. The tribe says it doesn't have enough officers to investigate child abuse claims.
McDonald says the BIA plans a study to see if the agents should be permanently assigned and whether any more help is needed on the reservation.
