Trade Talk: Contest will decide business moniker

FARGO – The owners of an upscale Fargo restaurant are planning a new eatery downtown, and they’re asking for the public’s help in deciding on a name.

Dan Hurder and Christian D’Agostino currently operate Monte’s Downtown, where D’Agostino is executive chef.

Now they’re in the process of creating a tavern-style restaurant and bar that price-wise will occupy a middle ground between upscale spots like Monte’s and bars that cater to the college crowd.

The new restaurant will be in the lower level of the Loretta Building at 210 Broadway, a historic structure that was given new life through the efforts of Kilbourne Group, a development company committed to revitalizing downtown Fargo.

Hurder said they are accepting ideas for what to call the new business and they’re using a Facebook page to gather suggestions.

The page can be found at www.facebook.com/202Broadway

The person whose idea is chosen will win a $500 gift certificate and a menu item will be named for them.

“We’ve had an overwhelming response,” Hurder said, referring to naming ideas left on the Facebook page. They haven’t yet set a cut-off date for the naming contest.

One person who left an idea on the Facebook page suggested they call the business “Haute Mess,” based on the idea the tavern will fit in somewhere between the high and low ends of the bar world.

Hurder said they haven’t defined what the menu will be for the new restaurant, other than to say D’Agostino will be putting a creative spin on traditional bar food.

They’re aiming for a March opening.

Outermost Layer

The Outermost Layer is operating out of a new location on Broadway in downtown Fargo.

The store opened at 102 Broadway in the fall of 2010.

It is now located at 518 Broadway, next to its sister store, Beyond Running.

The stores even have a pass-through that allows customers to easily move between them, said Sally Loeffler, owner of Outermost Layer and Beyond Running.

Loeffler said Outermost Layer sells brands “for life’s adventure,” including clothing for hardcore hiking, as well as sportswear and casual wear.

Hours for Outermost Layer are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday; and noon to 4 p.m., Sunday.

The phone number at the store is (701) 232-2977.

D-S Beverages grows

D-S Beverages, 201 17th St. N., in Moorhead, is building a $1.1 million addition that will provide 7,200 square feet of space for cold storage of beer, along with an enclosure for the dock in their receiving area.

The project comes on the heels of a 2011 project that resulted in a 10,000-square-foot warehouse addition and an 18,000-square-foot drive-thru for storage and loading of trucks.

D-S Beverages distributes Anheuser-Busch products, as well as craft suppliers.

The company recently acquired Anderson Beverages of Crookston, Minn., which expands D-S Beverages’ territory to include Polk County, Norman and Mahnomen counties in Minnesota.

The company also distributes to Clay, Becker, Wadena and Otter Tail counties in Minnesota, as well as to Cass, Traill and Steele counties in North Dakota.

The family-owned business was established in 1958.
