Third-period run propels Omaha past the Fargo Force

FARGO – Victory got away from the Fargo Force on Friday night.

The Force (4-10-2) held a one-goal lead after two periods, but gave up three goals in the third period to fall to Omaha 4-2 at Scheels Arena.

Tyler Vesel’s power-play goal was the equalizer for Omaha with 8 minutes, 9 seconds left in the third. Tyler Hynes then netted a goal two minutes later to put the Lancers up 3-2.

Steven Johnson was credited with an assist on all three Omaha (14-3-1) goals in the third.

“I thought Fargo played great in the first two (periods) and really took it to us, and we were lucky to be where we were at,” said Lancers head coach Brian Kaufman. “We got a few more bounces, and at the end of the day, it was a special-teams battle and our power play got a few goals for us.”

Omaha defenseman Jimmy Schuldt opened the scoring with a second-period goal, but it didn’t take long for the Force to answer back.

On the ensuing faceoff Frederik Tiffels – playing his fourth game for the Force – took a pass from Mikey Eyssimont and found the back of the net to score and knot the game 1-1.

“That was exciting,” Tiffels said of his first goal for the Force. “It was a nice goal. I was pretty pumped.”

With three minutes left in the second, Andrew McDonald picked up his third goal of the season with Cody Longie on the assist to give the Force a 2-1 lead.

The Force pulled goalie Cam Johnson for an extra attacker as time ran out in the third, but Omaha’s Jake Randolph took a lucky bounce and scored the empty-net goal to seal the win.

Johnson’s performance in net kept the Force alive early on. He collected 15 saves in the first period and 11 saves in the second en route to 31 in the game.

“We played undisciplined in the third (period), and I don’t think we played our best hockey,” Johnson said. “I think we took a period off, and that’s why they came and jumped on us and ended up beating us.”
