Bismarck Century makes it to ND Class A state volleyball tourney title game

MINOT, N.D. – It has been a long road for Bismarck Century, but it’s headed back to the North Dakota Class A state volleyball championship match.

The Patriots’ young roster didn’t appear to have much trouble with a senior-laden Bismarck St. Mary’s squad, nailing down a 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 semifinal win Friday night at the Minot State Dome.

“For being a young team, we’re very skilled,” said Century sophomore outside hitter Katie Scherr, who had a team-high 10 kills. “We have all the talent we need. We pull through and play together.”

With only two seniors in its lineup, Century (31-7) squares off against Jamestown in today’s 8 p.m. finale. The third-seeded Patriots will be making their 11th appearance in the championship match and are looking for their fourth title.

“It has been a long journey,” Century co-coach Jamie Zastoupil said. “We’re so young and we’ve had a lot of emotions along the way. You try to mold these athletes the way you want them. The blood, the sweat, the tears – they’ve worked hard.”

Jamestown beat Century twice in the regular season, including a sweep on the Patriots’ home floor.

“Jamestown’s a great team; they’re a tough one,” Zastoupil said. “The girls are excited, regardless. It’s going to be a great match.”

Century got out front early in all three sets, and St. Mary’s struggled to put together long runs. Losing senior hitter Mary Roller to an apparent leg injury in the opening set didn’t help, either. Roller was on crutches the rest of the match.

Katelyn Schaffner had 10 kills for the Saints, who play Shanley for third place at 2 p.m.

Century (kills-blocks-aces): Hadley Rosales 2-0-0, Katie Scherr 10-0-2 (8 digs), Jordyn Jossart 8-2-0 (10 digs), Shay Bense 1-0-0 (29 assists), Cassidy Miller 2-2-5, Alaina Furcht 7-3-0.

St. Mary’s: Katelyn Schaffner 10-3-0 (16 digs), Alexa Hutzenbiler 4-0-0, Kaylyn Herold 7-2-1, Allie Reisenauer 0-0-2 (30 assists), Ashley Wanner 4-3-0, Alex McIntee 4-1-0.
