LaMoure advances to Class B volleyball title match with win over Stanley

MINOT, N.D. – The third set hasn’t been kind to LaMoure all season, but so far at the North Dakota Class B state volleyball tournament, the Loboes have been able to tread through their pesky problem.

LaMoure defeated Stanley 25-12, 26-24, 24-26, 26-24 during the semifinals Friday at the Minot State Dome.

It was the second straight match in which the Loboes grabbed a 2-0 lead, but failed to seal a sweep. The Loboes defeated Grant County 3-1 on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

“We seem to have kept that trend going, but thankfully we were able to get the momentum back and get the win,” LaMoure head coach Laurie Good said.

The victory earns LaMoure its first-ever berth into a state title match.

Stanley (30-11-3) plays in the third-place match at

2 p.m. today.

“It’s been our goal since the beginning of the season,” LaMoure senior outside hitter Courtney Carlson said of advancing to the state title match. “It is so exciting.”

Carlson led the Loboes with 21 kills and 20 digs. The 5-foot-9 standout recorded the final three points of the match, getting a block to even the fourth set 24-24 and back-to-back kills to close out the victory.

“We played scrappy, played confident and played together,” Carlson said. “That’s what we did. I thought we stayed aggressive and were able to get them out of system so they couldn’t set up their offense.”

Errors – 15 of which came on the service line – kept the Blue Jays from getting its offense in full gear.

“Service errors definitely caught up with us in the match,” Stanley head coach Jessica Niemitalo said. “Anytime you have a lot of unforced errors, it is going to affect you and when we were giving away three or four points at a time that really took away from our momentum.”

Stanley senior middle blocker Chai Pappa got going late in the third set, getting back-to-back kills that broke a 24-24 tie and allowed the Blue Jays to force a fourth set.

Pappa led Stanley with 29 kills and four blocks.

Eighth-grader Anna Holen added 14 kills for the Loboes. LaMoure had 10 aces serves in the match, including six from senior libero Abby Warcken.

STANLEY (kills-blocks-aces): Sabrina Skarsgard 9-0-0 (19 digs), Chai Pappa 29-4-2 (20 digs), Savanah Meyer 2-0-0 (8 digs), Brianna Holland 0-1-1 (48 assists, 17 digs), Sarah Taylor 4-0-1 (32 digs), Angela Nielsen 11-0-0 (15 digs).

LAMOURE: Jade Wagner 0-0-0 (24 assists, 10 digs), Anna Holen 14-0-1 (13 digs), Katrina Hoff 2-0-0 (5 digs), Abby Warcken 0-0-6 (28 digs), Courtney Carlson 21-1-2 (20 digs), Talitha Hirschkorn 3-1-0, Jackie Meiklejohn 0-0-1 (13 digs, 13 assists), Kennedy Witt 7-2-0, Taylor Hebl 2-0-0.
