Carrington scores sweep over Beulah at ND Class B state volleyball tournament

MINOT, N.D. – Carrington made its debut at the North Dakota Class B state volleyball tournament look like old hat.

Madison Wendel piled up 15 kills as Carrington closed out quarterfinal play with a 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 sweep of Beulah on Thursday night at the Minot State Dome.

“We’ve been ready for this for a long time,” said Wendel, a 6-foot senior. “We came out of a difficult region.”

The fourth-seeded Cardinals (30-7) meet top-seeded Northern Cass in the semifinals at 8 tonight. Beulah plays Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood in consolation play at 2 p.m.

“We’ve just got to come out and play as hard as we did,” Wendel said. “We have to fix some stuff with our blocking and be ready to play.”

Wendel, Kayla Hochhalter and Jacey Engelhorn combined for 39 of their team’s 44 kills. Hochhalter had 14 and Engelhorn added 10.

“We want them to always keep swinging, and they did,” Carrington coach Sharon Boehmer said. “We mixed it up with our roll shots and harder hits. Brooke (Rosenau) had quick sets that Madison got on top of, and those are really hard to stop if the block isn’t there.”

Carrington trailed 16-13 in Set 1 before a five-point run put it up for good. Hochhalter had two kills and an ace to finish off a

22-22 tie in Set 2, and a pair of kills by Engelhorn helped key a rally in Set 3 that saw Carrington fall behind 16-14.

“They came out and played relaxed,” Boehmer said. “I felt like they were prepared for Beulah. We wanted them to gain momentum right away.”

Beulah was paced by Delaney Johansen’s 14 kills. Jaime Murschel and Nicole Schramm had 12 and 10, respectively.

BEULAH (kills-blocks-aces): Delaney Johansen 14-0-0 (16 digs), Lakin Kessler 1-0-1 (33 assists), Nicole Schramm 10-1-0, Cassidy Schutt 12-2-0, Jaime Murschel 12-2-0.

CARRINGTON: Jacey Engelhorn 10-0-2 (19 digs), Brooke Rosenau 2-0-1 (39 assists), Page Anderson 2-0-1 (14 digs), Madison Wendel 15-7-0, Kayla Hochhalter 14-1-0.
