Bismarck Century ousts Fargo Davies from ND state volleyball tourney
For the second straight year, the Patriots bounced the Eagles in the quarterfinals of the North Dakota Class A state volleyball tournament.
Century – the defending Class A champions – defeated Davies 25-10, 25-16, 25-21 on Thursday at the Minot State Dome.
“Offensively we played pretty hesitant, which allowed them to stay in system,” Davies head coach Missy Wilson said. “They played very quick on offense and were playing at a much faster pace than we are used to. We struggled to get into good position on defense because of the pace of their offense.”
The Patriots (30-7) advance to the semifinals and play Bismarck St. Mary’s at 8 p.m. today. Davies (24-9) plays Fargo South in a 2 p.m. consolation semifinal.
“Century came out very aggressive,” Wilson said. “They are the defending state champions and you have to be able to step up and play hard against them. Unfortunately we did not do that.”
Davies attempted to force a fourth set, but Century sophomore outside hitter Katie Scherr tipped the third set in the Patriots’ favor.
Tied 21-21, Scherr posted four straight kills, the last going for match point.
“We all knew we could pull through,” Scherr said. “We have been working hard the last couple of weeks, and we just kept at it. We really played up as a team.”
Junior outside hitter Jordyn Jossart led the Patriots with 16 kills and 10 digs.
Carla Binde and Amanda Kringlie each posted seven kills for the Eagles (24-9). Davies plays Fargo South in the 2 p.m. consolation semifinals match.
Century swept Davies in the quarterfinals last season, which was the Eagles’ first state tournament appearance in school history.
