High school boys hockey preview capsulesMoorhead
Coach: Jon Ammerman (first year)
Last season: 16-12-2 (finished fifth place in the state)
Who’s gone: Tony Uglem; Nick Uglem; Thomas Carey.
Key returners: Aaron Herdt, Sr., C; Will Borgen, Jr., D; Alex Mehnert, Jr., D; Jacob Dittmer, Jr., G.
Coach’s comments: “Defensively, we return a lot of minutes and experience. We expect a lot from (Will) Borgen and (Alex) Mehnert. (Jacob) Dittmer had some big minutes at the end of the season as a sophomore. Aaron Herdt is coming back for his senior season, obviously, our leading returning scorer. We have a lot of guys competing for spots. We’re still trying to figure out who we are and what kind of team we are. We’ll be pretty strong defensively. At forward, we’re deep. We have a lot of guys that are fighting for spots.”
Fargo South-Fargo Shanley
Coach: Wade Storey (third season)
Last year’s record: 11-13
Who’s gone: none.
Key returners: Dallas Raftevold, Sr., D; Tom George, Sr., F; Dylan Raftevold, Sr., F; Andrew Blumer, Sr., D; James Johannesson, Jr., F; Jake Salentine, Sr., G; Bret Kostka, Sr., G.
Coach’s comments: “We finally got some depth,” Storey said. “We finally got four or five lines of depth where we have been missing that the last couple years. We are looking forward to be able to challenge in our conference for that top spot. … I think our strength is our goaltending and our defense. We will be six or seven deep on the blue line. We will just have to see where the scoring comes from.”
Coach: Rob Aasand (fourth year)
Last year’s record: 20-7 (sixth place at state tournament)
Who’s gone: Cole Selberg, Sr., F; Michael Gunderson, F; Max Teschendorf, F; Matt Connelly, D; Christian Coleman, G; Brodie Gylten, D.
Key returners: Austin Tuessaint, Jr., G; James Schock, Sr., D; Seth Brenneman, Sr., D; Jackson Graalum, Sr., F; Spencer Helming, Sr., F; Grayson Klein, Jr., F.
Coach’s comments: “We have to grow on what the senior class last year established,” Aasand said. “I like what I see in net and on the blue line with our senior defensemen. … I think we will be all right up front, too. … We have team speed and an attitude that we are not going to quit for three periods.”
Coach: Troy Miller and Tim Capouch (sixth year)
Last year’s record: 8-15
Who’s gone: Blake Nelson, F; Dexter Guidinger, D; Alec Rowland, F; Wyatt Fretheim, D.

Coach’s comments: “Our new kids, our incoming sophomores, we have a nice group. They will help us, if not immediately, then somewhere down the road,” Miller said. “We are going to be young, but I think we will be just fine by the second half of the season. … We’re going to live and die with our seniors. If they can lead the younger guys, we should be in pretty good shape.”
Coach: Brian Davidson (fourth year)
Last year’s record: 20-7 (fourth place at state tournament)

Coach’s comments: “Our guys are excited. We think we can compete with anyone in the state of North Dakota,” Davidson said. “It’s fun to see some new faces. I think we are pretty balanced. We’ve got scoring punch, we’ve got some good defensemen and we have some youth. … I think the sky is the limit. We want to compete for a state championship, and I think we have the guys to do it.”
