Former South-Davies girls hockey standout Woken commits to University of Minnesota

FARGO – Former Fargo South-Davies girls hockey player Alex Woken has committed to play her collegiate career at the University of Minnesota.

Woken, who played her freshman season with the Bruins during the 2012-13, made her decision late last week.

Prior to start of her sophomore year, Woken transferred to Shattuck St. Mary’s School, a school known for its boys and girls hockey programs, in Faribault, Minn.

“I know it has been her dream to play college hockey for a long time and I know the Gophers were her favorite team,” Fargo South-Davies head coach Josh Issertell said. “Anytime you can see an athlete work hard day in and day out and achieve their dreams it’s pretty special. You always wish the best for those players.”

Woken scored 40 goals and added 23 assists for the Bruins last season and ranked third in the state’s scoring leaderboard.

“Alex is a great person, a great student and obviously is a great athlete,” Issertell said. “For her to commit to play at the University of Minnesota is just fantastic.”

Woken is the third South-Davies player to commit to a Division I hockey program in the last two years.

Lindsay Nagel, a member of the Bruins 2012 championship team, is a sophomore at the University of Mankato and Kara Tupa committed to the University of North Dakota in September.
