FARGO – According to Rod Glover, his business began as one “bright idea.”
When Glover decided to go into business installing Christmas lights, he purchased a Christmas Decor franchise in 1999.
Glover said he’s always loved Christmas, but he had no idea how to decorate professionally. He learned the basics from the company and continues to perfect the process each year.
Today, he lights up the holidays for hundreds of clients in Fargo-Moorhead and the surrounding area.
What kind of services does Christmas Decor provide?
We are a residential and commercial holiday and event decorating company. We focus on the holidays and are probably best known for the spectacular tree lights at some of our commercial accounts like Bell State Bank and Gate City Bank. We certainly appreciate them because they give us the opportunity to show our skills, so to speak.
Does your business operate year-round?
Christmas Decor is our primary business. I also operate Backyard Adventures, a backyard play set dealership, and do landscape and architectural lighting in the summer time.
I started this company under a corporation called Bright Ideas when I had this great idea to put up Christmas lights. That’s what started it, but I realized I needed to have key employees stick around to make the Christmas season successful, so I started other businesses in order to maintain some full-time employees. I’m up to five full-time employees and I run with 18 to 19 full-time (seasonal) employees this time of year.
We do find that we are busy with Christmas year-round. If we’re not installing something, we’re prepping, purchasing, training, learning and planning for next season.
Are you still accepting new customers for this season?
Yes, but we will not be able to get to any new clients until after the Thanksgiving holiday.
Do you give estimates?
Yes. I really have to go to the customer’s location and look at every possible decorating idea for that property. Then, I create a menu of ideas of things that would be applicable, non-invasive and safe for the property. At that point, the customer chooses a la carte those things they like that are within their budgets.
Do customers buy the lights from you?
No. We’re basically a service company. … The customer does not purchase anything from us. We provide the product and therefore we’re responsible for it all, including any repairs.
What do you enjoy about your job?
Each one of my companies has its benefits. With Christmas Decor, it’s that everybody who calls me loves Christmas. Everybody loves what I offer. … Parents will tell me how their kids love the lights. Even with commercial projects, we may hear hundreds of times how much people love our work. That is rewarding.
