Letter: Consequences will be very direI want my children, grandchildren and daughter-in-law not to have to fear death every time she has sex. Do we want a country where we force young, healthy girls and women to die because of the religious demands of a few?
Look around you. Imagine what the world would look like if those girls and women were gone – dead because of care denied in a country that prides itself in its medical advances.
If personhood is adopted, there will be a lot more funerals of otherwise healthy girls and women because the people of our country will have turned their backs on the most vulnerable among us: incest and rape victims, and those who cannot get safe abortions so they choose the only other available course and die because of it. Start putting together your funeral funds. Many families will be faced with these costs much sooner than they ever imagined.
Societal costs of raising the orphans of girls and women forced to die by the state will increase at least tenfold. Support for girls and women who are turned out on the street when they get pregnant, many with no skills or jobs available for them, will have to be housed, fed, clothed and educated, and their offspring after them. Laws will have to be changed to protect pregnant workers in all fields. Why should taxpayers have to foot the bill? Because if they approve personhood, the only options left are bad ones brought on by them.
