Polk County authorities warning of phone scam

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is warning area residents of a new telephone scam.

The office said Saturday that residents have reported receiving automated phone calls from 1-800 numbers saying they’re eligible for $50 to $220 in Verizon Wireless rebates. The message directs recipients to visit websites such as www.vzw123.com, where they are prompted to enter their account information.

The sheriff’s office said this scam uses the personal information entered by the recipients to gain access to funds or make purchases on their mobile account.

The websites look similar to Verizon Wireless’ official site, Saturday’s media release said, and often include the provider’s logos and colors.

Recipients of these calls are asked to call Verizon’s customer service hotline at (800) 922-0204 to report the scam, contact their wireless phone provider’s customer service department if they are not a Verizon customer or visit their local carrier’s retail stores.
