Minot secures ND state girls swimming title

GRAND FORKS – The North Dakota girls state swimming title is heading back west.

Minot won the championship Saturday, scoring 337 points to runner-up West Fargo’s 326. Defending champion Fargo North was third with 315.

“We love having it come back over to the west,” Minot said Dan Hinton said. “And we’ve had a great tradition at Minot. Once we got in a couple of meets this season, I thought we had a chance to win it.”

A year ago, North became the first East team since 1977 to win the state championship.

“It would have been nice to have kept it in the east,” North coach Talia Butery said. “We knew it would be close, and West Fargo gave Minot a run for it. Minot deserved to win. They have a great team.”

Minot won only three events – the 200 medley and the 200 freestyle relays, and the 50 freestyle, where teammates Emily Hamel and Francesca Walker-Rozo finished 1-2, respectively.

But the Majettes had top-six finishers in six open events, including a pair in four events, in capturing the program’s first state title since 2008.

“We actually don’t have the depth Minot has had in the past,” Hinton said. “That I know of, this is the smallest number we’ve brought to state in a long time. But it is quality depth. And we had several girls who dropped times and placed higher than their seeds.”

West Fargo coach Sally Sautner, whose team won the Eastern Dakota Conference meet, said there was no disappointment in finishing second.

“Not when your kids swim fast,” Sautner said. “We had a great meet. We had better times than in the conference meet. But Minot swam better.”

The Packers were led by Danica Dutt, who was named senior athlete of the year. Dutt claimed her fourth state title in the 100 butterfly, and also anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay and was runner-up to Fargo North’s Ellie Roche in the 200 individual medley.

Roche was one of two double open winners, as she also captured the 100 breaststroke. Bismarck Century’s Dani Bergeson was a double winner for the second straight season, as the junior won the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

The state’s coach of the year award had co-winners in Butery and Grand Forks’ Bryan Walls.
