Shanley, Davies reach East Region championship matchVALLEY CITY, N.D. – Alivia Fraase is the big name in the Fargo Shanley lineup, a junior hitter who has committed to play volleyball at the University of North Dakota.
The Deacons are playing in today’s East Region championship and have qualified for next week’s Class A state high school volleyball tournament because of balance and not one dominant hitter.
Shanley qualified for state on Friday by sweeping Fargo South 25-18, 25-13,
25-20 in the semifinals of the East Region tournament.
The 6-foot Fraase had a strong match with 12 kills, two blocks and 13 digs. But it was 5-foot-7 junior middle Somer Bucholz who led Shanley with 14 kills. And several other Deacons scored at key spots.
“Alivia is definitely a key part of the team, but we don’t rely on her. She
doesn’t get the ball like 70 percent of the time,” Shanley coach Curtis Johnson said. “We do feed off her. But we have other girls who have done well. Defenses follow Alivia around and blockers stick with her. That opens things up for other hitters. And our setters are smart enough to move the ball around.”
That showed in a key
Shanley went on a 15-6 run to build an insurmountable 19-9 lead. Shanley had 10 kills in the run, coming from six players, with Bucholz getting four.
“We made solid passes, ran our offense and I think we had South on its heels,” Johnson said of the run. “We played really aggressive. Teams see Alivia and think stop her and they’ll win. That plays right into our hands. We showed we have other kids who can hit.”

Fargo Davies had not one, but two comebacks in beating Grand Forks Red River 22-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-17 in Friday’s second semifinal.
After winning the opening set, Red River had narrow leads in both the second and third sets, only to see Davies rally.
The Riders were two points from going up 2-0 in sets, leading 23-21 in the second. But Davies closed on a 5-1 run to pull even. Then, in the third set, Red River led 17-16, only to see Davies close on a 9-3 spurt for the win. It was a run of long rallies and outstanding defense on both sides of the net.
“Sometimes we’ve struggled to finish,” Davies coach Missy Wilson said. “I’m not sure why. But tonight the kids started to pick up on what Red River was doing. We were reading their tip kills and where they were hitting. And our blocking stepped up. That’s been a strong area for us.”
The Eagles totaled 15 blocks, led by Katelyn Olson and Natalie Tomhave with four apiece and Alayna Haugen with three.
