West Fargo takes EDC girls swimming title

FARGO – West Fargo won the first event of the day and the last event of the day and enough in between to win this year’s Eastern Dakota Conference girls swimming title.

The Packers finished first in five events and scored 529 points to defeat two-time defending champion Fargo North on Saturday at Davies High School.

“They walked in here wanting it,” said Packers head swimming coach Sally Sautner. “I can only be proud that they walked in knowing exactly what they had to do and they got it done.”

Senior standout Danica Dutt won one individual event for the Packers and swam on two winning relay teams. Dutt took first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.13 seconds and helped her team to wins in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

“It was a really good race for me. When I saw the time, I was really happy with it.” Dutt said of her individual win. “We had hard practices this week. I think after being tapered things will go a lot better for me next weekend.”

Dutt capped a stellar Saturday with a come-from-behind win in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:37.82, setting an EDC record in the process.

Swimming third for North in the relay, Ellie Roche extended an already lengthy lead, giving the Spartans a chance to redeem themselves after a disqualification earlier in the 200-yard medley relay, but the lead proved to be too little for a determined Dutt, who powered through the last leg to finish less than a second faster than North’s Maddie Derby.

“It really sets it up for state,” Sautner said of the close race. “That’s exactly what I want them to do next weekend. I need them to just hold together and still be there for each other a week from today.”

The disqualification paved the way for a Packers first-place finish in the event with a time of 1:54.27.

“We had a little bit of a rough start to the meet, but I feel like our girls bounced back and made the best out of a tough situation,” North head coach Talia Butery. “It’s probably a little bit of nerves, a little bit of excitement, a little bit of everything. But it’s part of our sport, and better it happened this weekend than next weekend.”

Roche wasn’t without success on Saturday.

Roche picked up wins in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke in 2:13.57 and 1:09.54, respectively.

Derby’s time of 1.01.77 in the 100 backstroke was enough for first place and 20 points to help the Spartans finish second with 374.

“It always fun racing some that you know so well,” Roche said of her close race against Dutt in the 200-yard individual medley. “I’m really happy for her. She’s such a great athlete.”
