UPDATE: One person dead, 1 injured in Highway 85 crash in western NDBELFIELD, N.D. – One person was killed Friday afternoon in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 85 about 24 miles north of Belfield, the North Dakota Highway Patrol reported.
According to the patrol, at 3:15 p.m., a car traveling south on Highway 85 tried to pass some vehicles in a no-passing zone when it struck a 2000 Sterling propane truck head-on in the northbound lane. Both vehicles caught on fire.
The driver of the car, identified by the Highway Patrol as Kenneth Serr, 36, of Wichita, Kan., was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the propane truck, Justin Reynolds, 32, of Eagle River, Wis., was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Dickinson for a medical evaluation.
The patrol said no propane leaked or caught on fire.
The crash remains under investigation. Highway 85 remained closed Friday evening with traffic being routed to side roads.
