Letter: A change of heart about Dean Bresciani

On Oct. 28, my letter was published in response to a story in The Forum on Oct 18, which stated that North Dakota State University was planning to expand a policy of offering a tuition discount to the families of NDSU employees. The tuition discount would now include domestic partners – so really everyone in a staff member’s household is eligible. It went on to say that the goal was to make the hiring policy more welcoming to LGBT applicants.

I read that as meaning this was an affirmative action – preference to gays – hiring policy. It was a short article. That fact was not stated at all. I don’t know what was said in that meeting. I shouldn’t have made that assumption.

Is it not more likely that NDSU simply wants a level playing field, so that everyone, including LGBT candidates, would be in the pool of applicants from which the best of the best are chosen? That’s what I want. I would expect NDSU leaders to go after the best. So instead of criticizing NDSU President Dean Bresciani, now I say “kudos.”
