Schatz still has chance to win Outlaws racing titleINDIANAPOLIS – Donny Schatz is looking to become the first driver in World of Outlaws sprint car racing history to overcome a points deficit entering the final weekend and win a championship.
Schatz, who grew up in Minot, N.D., and now lives in West Fargo, trails leader Daryn Pittman by 52 points entering the Outlaws final race this weekend at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.
Schatz still has a chance to win his sixth Outlaws championship. The Outlaws championship has been decided by less than 50 points only twice in the previous 35 seasons.
Schatz was involved in the closest title fight in 2009, when he defeated Jason Meyers by 19 points. This season, Schatz has posted a career-best 22 A-feature victories on 19 different tracks.
“Mathematically, it’s doable,” Schatz said. “We’ll just do our best and, if we come out on top, great. But if we don’t, we know we gave it everything we had and there will be another championship to chase.”
