Central Cass claims North Dakota Class B, District 2 volleyball championship
The Squirrels swept Northern Cass 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 during the tournament’s championship match on Monday at Central Cass High School.
“This win is important and a major confidence booster for our team heading into the Region 1 tournament,” senior middle blocker Faith Dooley said. “We know we have to improve after every match and this win pushes us to get better.”
Central Cass (33-3-1) enters the Region 1 tournament – set for Nov. 11-14 at Kindred High School – as the top seed from District 2. The Squirrels will play District 1, No. 4-seeded Oakes in the quarterfinals.
Northern Cass (27-4-2) will be the District 2’s No. 2 seed and play District 1, No. 3-seeded Lisbon in the quarterfinals.
A balanced offensive attack, that staved off several Northern Cass rallies, allowed the Squirrels to earn the win Monday.
“There are four really good teams left from our district and if you start going to one particular hitter those teams will key in on that,” Central Cass head coach Chris Hahn said. “The only way you prevent that from happening is going to different hitters and we did a good job of that. We are lucky to have a lot of players who can get us points and I’m really happy we have the personnel that we do.”
Leading the way for the Squirrels was Dooley, who finished with 11 kills and two blocks. Junior Macie Romsdal and senior Gabby Grommesh each added six kills for Central Cass.
The Squirrels also benefited from a large number of errors committed by the Jaguars.
“We had an uncharacteristic night,” Northern Cass head coach Tom Klapp said. “We made a lot more hitting errors than we normally do. Part of that had to do with their hitting and blocking, but we just have to make better decisions.”
Central Cass is now 3-0 against the Jaguars this season.
Northern Cass seniors Vanessa Johnson and Paige Verwest each finished with nine kills.
“The biggest thing for us is our team confidence,” Klapp said. “It seems like every time we play Central Cass our confidence goes down a bit. The girls have to realize how good they are and go out and execute.”
NORTHERN CASS (Kills-blocks-aces): Johnson 9-2-1, Hilde 5-0-0, Olson 2-0-1 (20 assists), Mitzel 0-1-0, Verwest 9-0-0, McDonald 1-0-1.
CENTRAL CASS: Dooley 11-2-0, Bresnahan 4-0-0, Erickson 0-0-1 (23 assists), Grommesh 6-0-1, Romsdal 6-2-0, Cramer 4-0-1.
