Weather Talk: Recent Novembers have been generally mild, dry

November is the month that winter settles into the area. Our average high drops to 27 degrees at the end of the month, and perhaps even more noticeable, our average low will drop to 12 degrees on Nov. 30. The overall average temperature for the month is about 29 degrees.

Although November can be a very harsh and cold month, in recent years, November has been generally mild and dry. The last November with below-average temperatures was back in 2003. Most years since then have been noticeably above average. Fargo-Moorhead averages 7.9 inches of snow in November, yet there has been only one year since 2002 with above-average snowfall.

Six of the past nine Novembers have produced less than 1 inch of snow. Although it would be hard to argue that this month would not qualify as a winter month by most standards, in the past decade, our Novembers have given us some bonus autumn weather to enjoy.
